What type of clients do you work with?

I work with anyone around 11 and up. I particularly love helping middle schoolers deal with all the stress and awkwardness that is middle school. I love working with adults who struggle with perfectionism, balancing work and life, and parenthood. I also love working with creative adults who are thinking about starting their own business or who are already entrepreneurs. I joke with many of my clients that if they work with me long enough, I'll convince them to quit their job and start their own thing. And finally, I love helping parents learn ways to reconnect with and support their teens.

How would clients describe you?

My clients, especially my teens, know that nothing shocks me. My office is truly a space to share whatever thoughts or feelings come up. My clients would also say I'm gentle but will definitely point out areas where they either need to take responsibility or change.

What are sessions like with you?

I'm a strong believer (and research backs it up) that a good therapeutic relationship is important for successful therapy. That means I will spend a lot of time really getting to know my clients and their interests and sharing some of my own. We will definitely spend time talking about TV shows, movies, music, and all the other things that make us human. I obviously won't share everything about my life, but I find change seems to happen a little more quickly when my clients can relate to me.

I use a lot of mindfulness in my work and encourage clients to be accepting of any thoughts or feelings that pop up. Through acceptance, unhelpful thoughts and feelings tend to dissipate more quickly, and you can get back to focusing on the things you want.

I encourage my clients to grab coffee, tea, a snack, a blanket, or whatever makes them feel comfortable during sessions. Music, video games, and the occasional kitten or dog are always welcome.

When clients leave your office, how do you want them to feel?

Not every therapy session is going to feel great, especially if we are working through tough stuff. But, ideally I want my clients to leave feeling heard and like they have a place to come back to where they can truly be themselves. I want them to feel hopeful even if things aren't going well. We won't solve everything, especially in one session, but I want them to feel like they have someone in their corner.
